Sundays and shop hours
Ladenschluss

On this page
Before heading to a shop, check its hours for the day. Legal limits, Sunday and holiday openings, and exceptions depend on the Land and the kind of shop. The official services below can help you find the rules for your location.
In short
- Check the shop’s posted hours or website for the day you plan to visit. A legal opening window does not require a shop to stay open throughout it.
- Do not treat 20:00 as a nationwide closing time or an advertised Sunday opening as permission for every shop. Check the applicable Land rule and any local approval.
- Pharmacies, petrol stations, travel hubs and other shop types can have specific exceptions. The allowed goods, dates and hours can be limited.
- Public holidays can differ by Land or locality. Check the holiday at the shop’s location, especially when travelling across a Land border.
What you need to know
Ladenschluss means shop-closing rules. Opening rules and exceptions depend on Land law. The federal Shop Closing Act still contains times in section 3, but those figures alone do not tell you the current rule for a particular shop. Check the law that applies in that Land.
The Federal Portal’s shop-hours service starts with a location selection. Choose where the shop is, then use the regional information and named authority for legal questions or an opening exception. The federal statute portal has the federal Shop Closing Act. Opening hours, Sunday trading and public holidays are Land law. The federal and Länder justice portal lists each Land’s statute service. Use it or the location service above to find the Land’s official statute site, and search for Ladenöffnung or Ladenschluss and, for holidays, Feiertagsgesetz.
Actual trading hours and legal permission are different questions. For a shopping trip, check the particular shop’s hours for the date. For running a shop or planning staff work, check the applicable legal limits and any required approval with the competent authority; a sign in the window is not that approval. A pharmacy or station-shop exception is not a general permission for unrelated shops.
Public-transport timetables and other services need their own opening or service information. Use the transport operator’s timetable for a Sunday journey; the Deutschlandticket guide explains the ticket, not a particular day’s service.
What to do
- Check the shop’s address, date and actual hours before setting out, particularly on Sundays and public holidays.
- For the legal rule, open the linked official shop-hours service and select the shop’s location. Use its regional information or contact the named authority about the shop type and any exception.
- If you need the law itself, use the location service to identify the Land and authority, then use the justice portal directory or search that Land’s official statute site for Ladenöffnung or Ladenschluss. Check the Land’s holiday law and any local rule for the date concerned.
- Before relying on a special Sunday opening or planning a staffing rota, confirm which shops, goods, dates and hours are covered with the competent authority. Do not copy an announcement from another municipality.
Common mistakes
- Applying a federal or another Land’s clock time without checking the law at the shop’s location.
- Assuming that a pharmacy, bakery, petrol-station or railway-station exception applies to every shop and every product.
- Treating a holiday observed at home as the holiday calendar for a shop in another region.
